Bill Davidson uses old tech materials and tools:
pencil, pen, compass, ruler and blade, ink, paint
and thread. Although his pieces are precise and
complex, computers are not used. See the
demo
for one of his techniques.
Bill's work has been in 3 group shows and 4 one-man shows. His painting, "Intimate Aura" was in the adjudicated show for the BC Festival of the Arts in 2001. His hand-embroidered tapestry "Flying Carpet" won the Curator's Choice Award at the 2007 Gibsons Landing Fibre Arts Festival.
Knotwork can be found in the cultural heritage of all populated continents. It's not exclusive to the Celts.
Bill avoids the use of symbols since they draw one into the domain of a particular culture or restrictive interpretation. His artistic interest is in universality and inclusion, not exclusivity. While being in love with knotwork, he's not a born-again Celt.
Knots, spirals, geometric constructions and mandalas are a visual alphabet, timeless and trans-cultural, evocative, expressive and intoxicating. These artworks have no intentional reference to any ideology, culture, theology, dogma, preaching, teaching or philosophical position. Geometry speaks its own language. No culture holds the patent on the triangle, the Golden Mean, the circle, the spiral or π. These artworks have original designs and knots, not knock-offs of art that was new over a thousand years ago.
Bill lives on Vancouver Island.
